Golf Equipment for Getting Started

Welcome to the wonderful world of golf! Whether you’re just starting or rediscovering your passion for the game, having the right equipment is essential to enjoying your time on the course. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the essentials you need to have with you, and explore additional options to bring, all to prepare you for having a great time on course.

Must Haves

Let's start with the basics—what you absolutely need to get going:

  • Golf Clubs: Begin with a basic set of clubs consisting of a driver, a couple of irons (6-9), a pitching wedge, a sand wedge, and a putter. These clubs cover a range of distances and shots you’ll encounter on the course. Check out our recent blog Each Golf Club Explained for a better understanding of each club.

  • Golf Balls: You'll need golf balls, but for now, keep it budget-friendly. Look to spend less than $40 for a dozen that'll last you a good while. You can start being a bit more selective once you're not losing a couple of balls every round.

  • Tees: Tees are small pegs used to elevate the ball slightly off the ground for your initial shot on each hole. Have a handful of tees in your bag at all times.

  • Golf Gloves: A glove provides grip and prevents blisters. Choose a glove that fits snugly but allows for movement. Remember, if you are a right-handed golfer, you wear a left-handed golf glove, and vice versa for left-handed golfers.

  • Golf Bag: A golf bag keeps your clubs organized and stores your accessories. Look for options with enough compartments for clubs, balls, tees, and other accessories. There are two types of golf bags to choose from based on how you enjoy playing the game:

    • If you prefer to walk - Carry/Stand Bags: These have built-in legs that extend when you set the bag down, keeping your clubs upright and easily accessible. They are lighter than a cart bag and won’t typically have as many dividers for clubs.

    • If you prefer to ride - Cart Bags: Designed for use with golf carts, these bags often have a heavier base, offering more protection for clubs and additional storage space.

Nice To Haves

Expand your gear with these additional items that enhance comfort and convenience:

  • Golf Shoes: Proper footwear provides stability and traction during your swing. Choose golf shoes that fit comfortably and offer good support.

  • Divot Tool: This handy tool becomes more valuable as your approach shots find their way onto the greens more often. Use it to repair ball marks and maintain the course.

  • Towel: We always recommend having a towel in your golf bag. A towel is essential for keeping your clubs clean, wiping your hands, or cleaning your ball during a round.

  • Golf GPS or Rangefinder: These tools help you measure distances to hazards and greens, aiding in club selection and shot accuracy. Choose between GPS devices that provide course maps or rangefinders that use lasers to pinpoint distances.

  • Ball Marker: Used to mark the position of your ball on the green before lifting it to clean or when others are putting. Choose a marker that reflects your style or personality. Coins work too!

  • Valuables Pouch: Keep your personal items secure—keys, wallet, phone, etc.

What’s in Iron Lady’s Bag?

Curious about what else we carry in our bags at Iron Lady Golf:

  • Extra Accessories: Extra gloves, sunscreen, a first-aid kit, and a hat for sun protection.

  • Water & Snacks: Stay hydrated with a refillable water bottle and keep energy levels up with bars or nuts during long rounds.

  • Rain Gear: A rain jacket and golf umbrella for unexpected showers.

  • Speaker: Enjoy your favourite tunes while you play for an added boost of motivation and enjoyment (if your playing partners are okay with it and it’s not loud enough to disrupt others on the course).

Now you're equipped with the essentials and extras to enjoy your golfing experience fully. Happy golfing!
