TGL: A Beginner’s Guide

1. What is TGL?

TGL, or TMRW Golf League, is a venture co-founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. It features teams of PGA Tour stars competing in a state-of-the-art venue. By combining virtual simulator with live gameplay, TGL aims to modernize golf and revolutionize how fans watch and enjoy the sport.

2. How does it work?

  • Teams: There are six teams: Atlanta Drive GC, Boston Common Golf, Jupiter Links Golf Club, Los Angeles Golf Club, New York Golf Club, and The Bay Golf Club. Two teams compete against each other in a match. Each features an impressive roster, including stars like Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Ludvig Åberg, and Xander Schauffele.

  • Field of Play: Players start each hole by hitting their tee shots into a massive 75-foot simulator screen (the ScreenZone), then complete the hole on a real-world, tech-enhanced putting green (the GreenZone). It’s an AMAZING piece of technology that mimics a real green—take a closer look here.

  • Format: Matches consist of 15 holes—nine holes played in a three-player alternate-shot format (Triples) and six holes played head-to-head (Singles).

  • Pace of Play: A 40-second shot clock keeps the action fast-paced, a feature that should help TGL avoid the pace of play issues currently plaguing the PGA Tour.

3. What makes it different?

This isn’t your grandfather’s golf league. You can picture TGL as a big golfing/dance party. Players are mic’d up, giving fans unique access to their strategies and banter. Every team has a walkout song, amping up the atmosphere and going against the stereotypical professional tournament routine.

Of course, Woods’ walkout to Eye of the Tiger has been the standout entry so far.

4. What’s next?

Its still in its early stages and working through challenges like tech issues and some blowout results, but TGL has great potential. Its innovative approach to team competition and fan engagement challenges golf’s traditional format, making the sport more accessible and entertaining for modern audiences. With its star power, TGL could inspire a new generation of fans and players alike.

While the initial events will feature male golfers, TGL has hinted at future collaborations with the LPGA and mixed-team formats. We hope to see players like Brooke Henderson and Nelly Korda teeing it up at the SoFi Center soon—fingers crossed!
