Your Guide to The Masters
The Masters is one of the most famous and exciting tournaments in golf. Every year it is held at the picturesque Augusta National GC in Georgia. It is one of the four men’s Majors. The 87th Masters tournament starts Thursday April 6th, 2023!
Here’s a few things you might not know about this prestigious event…
The Green Jacket
The greatest prize and honour at The Masters is when the winner receives "The Green Jacket", placed on them when they win by the previous year’s winner. These green jackets are exclusively worn by members of Augusta National and previous winners of The Masters. The tradition has been going since 1949.
Interesting fact: Only the reigning champion is allowed to remove their green jacket from the grounds of Augusta National. All other green jackets must remain at the Club and are presented to members upon their arrival.
Par 3 Contest
Every year on the Wednesday before the tournament begins, Augusta National’s nine hole course hosts a par-3 tournament. This is renowned for having a relaxed atmosphere with friends and family caddying for many of the players and sometimes even hitting a few shots themselves.
Despite the fun and jovial nature of the contest, it is one that the superstitious golfers often specifically avoid winning. Since first starting in 1960, no golfer has ever won The Masters in the same year as the par-3 tournament.
Amen Corner
A phrase you will hear a lot during the tournament is ‘Amen Corner’. Coined by Sports Illustrated journalist Herbert Warren Wind in 1958, it is commonly used to refer to holes 11, 12 and 13. Possibly the most famous three hole stretch in golf, it is known for its difficulty and risk-reward nature. Every year it is guaranteed to deliver a high dose of drama.
Azalea Cocktail
Named after the beautiful azalea flowers famous for being in full bloom during the tournament, this alcoholic drink is the unofficial cocktail of The Masters.
The Azalea cocktail is simple enough to make. Just shake together two parts vodka, two parts pineapple juice, one part lemon juice and a teaspoon of grenadine. Serve up into a tall glass over plenty of ice. The result should be a bright pink azalea coloured cocktail. Fruity, refreshing and perfect for Masters Sunday!
Masters Lingo
Those watching tournament play on site are called "patrons" at Augusta, not "fans" or "spectators." The terms "first nine" and "second nine" are used to describe the holes, not "front nine" or "back nine" or any other variation. In addition, you bring your "badge" to The Masters, not your "ticket."
Who’s Playing?
Tiger Woods. Need we say more…
But in addition to the excitement of Tiger, the LIV players are also participating, marking the first time LIV Golf players have been eligible to play alongside PGA cardholders this season.
